Music lessons are rewarding and an important part of the
development of the student. To make this experience as profitable as possible I
have outlined some of the responsibilities for students and parents. Please
discuss these with your student before making the commitment to lessons.
Students Responsibilities
1)
Music lessons are to be a schedule priority for the student.
Concepts and techniques are built week after week, one at a time. This is a
long term ongoing process not to be confused with most other extracurricular
activities.
2)
Student must commit to practicing at least 5 times per week.
It is okay to double up on a day if a day is missed. Ex. Practice Saturday
morning and Saturday evening if Friday was missed.
3)
Do all written and listening assignments.
4)
Do not be afraid to ask questions. If you dont understand
something just say so.
5)
NRCA only: Fourth graders on up are responsible
for coming to their lesson from their class ON TIME.
6)
Take it upon yourself to review previous music. In other
words play for fun. Music is most fun when we play what we know. I encourage
all my students to play pieces that they previously enjoyed working on.
7)
Always be on the lookout for new music to play. Visit the
music store often. Motivation is boosted when the student has some say in the
music selection process. (Of course, you still have to play what Mr. Strong
assigns)
Parents Responsibilities
1)
Tuition for whole semester.
2)
Parents of piano students: Observe students practice at
least twice per week, but no more than 3 times. This applies mainly to younger
students in their first 2 years.
over
3)
Ask the all telling question on the day prior to lesson
day: Are you prepared for your lesson tomorrow??
4)
Purchase books and materials as directed by teacher in a
timely manner.
5)
If possible, help with refreshments for the recital
6)
Flood the house with piano music of various styles: classical,
ragtime, jazz, Christian, pop, showtunes, etc. The student needs to understand
what they are aspiring to.
7)
Please make sure the instrument the student is practicing on
is in good working order and tuned regularly. A piano must be tuned at least
once per year. Older pianos will require once every 6 months.
Missed lesson policy
If teacher misses a lesson it will be made up at the
earliest convenience for the student and teacher. If the student misses a
lesson for any reason other than school conflict (i.e. field trip) it will not
be made up . As with any school, the responsibility is on the student to show
up for lesson. The teacher cannot be responsible for personal situations that
may cause the student to miss.
Assignment of music
The student will be assigned music throughout the semester
as he/she progresses. This can be obtained from Burrage music on Green St. or
Maus Music on Glenwood Ave. I will also
be assigning music from my own repertoire of arrangements and piano method as I
deem necessary. I do require every
piano student to have a metronome to work with on a regular basis. These
are available at any music store.
